EAST Grinstead schools have taken part in a Schoolympics event which saw youngsters from 50 primary schools across the Mid Sussex District compete in handball, golf, cycling, New Age Kurling and Heptathlon.
Mid Sussex District Council funded the competition to help local people turn their Olympic inspiration into action, working with Mid Sussex Active (formerly known as the School Sports Partnership) to organise the event.
“The ‘Schoolympics’ has inspired young people to take part in different sports and I am proud that Mid Sussex District Council was able to support this wonderful event,” said Councillor Mandy Thomas-Atkin, MSDC chairman.
“The London 2012 Olympics captured the imagination of a nation and generated a great deal of excitement and enthusiasm for sport.
“Following on from the Games, young people in particular have been keen to get involved with sporting activities and as a Council we want to help them as much as we can.
“We have some fantastic sports facilities here in Mid Sussex and we want to encourage as many people as possible to use them, get active and remain healthy,” said Councillor Pru Moore, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Sustainability.
“It is so important that future generations of sportsmen and women have access to good facilities and the opportunity to develop their skills by taking part in local competitions. With events like the ‘Schoolympics’ I hope we can continue the momentum of sports participation created by the London 2012 Games and create a true Olympic legacy in Mid Sussex.”
