POWELL Dora Mary Grave Section 5C No. 301
Dora M Powell (nee Penny) (1874-1964) was Variation X (‘Dorabella’) of Sir Edward Elgar’s popular ‘Enigma Variations’ (1899).
She received a cryptic letter from Elgar and was unable to solve it. Today, this is known as the ‘Dorabella Cipher’ and is one of the world’s topmost unbroken and mysterious codes. Many have tried to solve it, and all have failed.
For nearly 50 years, she was a resident of East Grinstead and became a popular community figure. “The town was one of great culture, behind which she was the moving spirit” (East Grinstead Observer, 1969). Dora lived at Oakcroft, Moat Road, East Grinstead which was renamed by her husband to “Poels” which reflects the correct pronunciation of Lord Baden-Powell of whom he was a distant relation. This property later became Poels Court which is now a block of flats.
Her archives (called the ‘Dorabella Bequest’) are held at the Royal College of Music.
Her book ‘Edward Elgar: Memories of a Variation (1937)’ has been extensively quoted by writers on Elgar and has been re-printed or re-published four times since.
A blue plaque is dedicated to her at the Old Rectory, Wolverhampton.

TRUSCOTT Sir George Wyatt, 1st Baronet of Oakleigh. He is the Deed holder of Grave 1C No. 21 – entry in register shows ‘Truscott was knighted while he was sheriff, in the November 1902 Birthday Honours list. For his service as Lord Mayor, he was customary created a Baronet, of Oakleigh in East Grinstead in the County of Sussex, on 16 July 1909. ‘Oakleigh’ is now called Truscott Manor and is a home for the elderly.
