Liz is elected new Town Mayor

CLLR Liz Bennett is our new Town Mayor, with Cllr Margaret Belsey as her deputy.

Liz, who is also a District and County councillor, has lived in East Grinstead all her life and has “two beautiful daughters”.
She is very much involved with the town community and her charity work has included prison visiting, and volunteering for the hospital radio service at the QVH.

In her acceptance speech Liz said: “I am very privileged and honoured to take up the role of Town Mayor in this, a very significant and momentous year for the town.

“In June we celebrate, the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen. This is a once in a lifetime event and, I believe, a rare opportunity for the community as a whole to come together over the celebrations.

“I am also thrilled that East Grinstead has been chosen for the Olympic Torch to pass through on 17 July. This will be an historic occasion for the town and will attract large numbers of people which will give the local economy a welcome boost.

“So both the Queen’s Jubilee and the Olympic Torch will make this year one to remember for all of us, and I will be proud and honoured to represent the town during the planned events to mark both these landmark occasions.

“I have lived in this town for my entire life and have always been amazed by, and grateful to, the charities that work with, and give so generously to, others. This year I am pleased to be given the chance to give them all my support and learn more about each of them.

“As is the custom of the Town Mayor, I have chosen my own charity to support this year and it is one close to my heart. In 1995 I met the most remarkable young man. I was his teacher and he my student, in what was then known as Kingsway School, here in East Grinstead. What is noteworthy and remarkable about this, was that I taught a class of 12 to 18-year-old mainstream students, amongst whom was this young man who had had a brain injury from birth and yet came to the school and was able to study and enjoy recreation with all the other students.

“Back then, this didn’t happen in education and was something of a pioneering exercise. This student made a big impression on me, with his strong determination to do well in his studies: and hearing his plans for the future with such excitement, I developed a strong respect for him and his family in their endeavours to help him succeed.

“This student of mine is now an adult and still just as remarkable, his name is Doran Scotson and he has cerebral palsy. His mother Linda, set up The Advance Centre in Station Road, here in East Grinstead.

“Linda set about extensive research and studied for a PhD working on the respiratory system and with Linda’s passion and determination to find a better way of living for her son and others like him, the Advance Centre has now helped families in East Grinstead and worldwide. Doran has also continued to achieve and has even run a Half Marathon. He is an inspiration to us all.

“So I have chosen The Advance Centre. To support and promote such amazing work, by such a dedicated team of people, is a great privilege for me and I would like to thank Linda now, for all the years she has been in the town, working to improve the lives of so many brain-injured children.

“Finally, as your Town Mayor for the coming year, I pledge to work hard to support you all in your aspirations for the town and the people who live and work here.”

A22 London Road roadworks

PIH (Property Investment Holdings) have advised the Town Council that further to discussions with West Sussex County Council the roadworks will be complete on Friday 1st June.

This positive change in the plans has been welcomed by the Town Council following representations to West Sussex by the Council, residents and businesses as to the disruption caused.

WSCC – Roadworks on East Street, Turners Hill

The above road works were delayed due to the extreme delays caused at the A22 London Road/Imberhorne Lane junction. In order to reduce disruption these have now been scheduled to take place on Friday 25 May starting from 7.30pm. The road will be closed and local diversions will be sign posted. They are due to be completed in the early hours of Saturday 26 May.

We are advised that the roadworks are necessary for essential works to be complete before the Ardingly South of England Show.

For further information please contact WSCC helppoint at East Grinstead Library, tel: 01342 300780 or visit the website at www.westsussex.gov.uk.

Excitement heats up for Olympic Torch Relay – residents urged to get involved

Mid Sussex District Council is appealing for community minded residents to become volunteer marshals for the Olympic Torch Relay.

The Olympic Torch will be coming to Copthorne and East Grinstead on Tuesday 17 July, providing the local community with the chance to see the Olympic Flame at close quarters. Mid Sussex District Council is looking for local people to volunteer their time to help ensure the safety of the public on the day.

The Olympic Flame has now started its journey from Greece and will arrive in the UK on 18 May, ready for the Olympic Torch Relay to begin the following day. Representing peace, unity and friendship, the Flame will pass through Mid Sussex just 10 days before the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The Council hopes that local people will be keen to be part of this momentous event and is

holding volunteer registration sessions at East Grinstead Library on Saturday 19 May and Saturday 26 May, between 10am and 4pm.

The volunteer marshals will help to:

direct pedestrians along safe routes

  • monitor crowd movement and activity
  • provide information about entrances, exits, routes, the location of toilets and first aid/lost children points
  • support the work of the emergency services and Chief Marshals
  • help with road closures
  • marshal overspill car parks

Volunteer marshals must be over the age of 18 and physically fit enough to stand for an extended period of time. A good standard of health is important because volunteer marshals must be able to respond to an emergency, raise the alarm and take immediate action if required. All volunteers will need to be available from 7.30am until 12.30pm on Tuesday 17 July.

If it’s not possible for people to attend one of registration sessions, residents can express an interest in becoming a volunteer marshal by sending their name and telephone number to culture@midsussex.gov.uk or telephone 01444 477495.

Notice of Variation of Car Parking Charges

Mid Sussex District Council, who own and administer the town’s ‘Pay and Display’ off street car parking, have announced the new parking charges that will come into effect on 2 July 2012.

The Order and Appendix with Schedule of locations and charges in more detail is available for inspection at the offices of the East Grinstead Town Council, East Court, East Grinstead.

Town centre shops open toilets to the public

TOWN centre businesses in Mid Sussex are opening their toilet facilities to the general public as part of a new Community Toilet Scheme.

Mid Sussex District Council is piloting the scheme in East Grinstead, Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath, to maximise the number of clean, safe and accessible toilets available to the public.

Participating town centre shops and organisations make their toilet facilities available to the general public in exchange for a small annual payment from the Council.

So far, four local businesses have signed up and are now welcoming the public to use their toilet facilities. They are:

  • Chequer Mead Arts Centre, De La Warr Road, East Grinstead
  • Kings Leisure Centre, Moat Road, East Grinstead
  • Costa Coffee, South Road, Haywards Heath
  • Poppins Restaurant, Church Walk, Burgess Hill

Stickers are displayed in the window of every business taking part in the Community Toilet Scheme and additional signs will soon be placed around the towns to help direct the public to the new toilet facilities. By opening up the toilets in local businesses for public use, shoppers will have access to toilets at many different locations in the heart of the town centre and because they are always staffed, the facilities will be clean and safe to use. The facilities will be available during business opening hours and there is no charge to the customer or obligation to make a purchase.

“It’s great to see local businesses are embracing this Community Toilet Scheme because it has the potential to benefit everyone involved,” said Councillor Pru Moore, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Sustainability. “Local shops are able to increase the number of people visiting their premises, giving them the potential to increase revenue, and the public has a greater choice and standard of toilet facilities.”

Mid Sussex District Council would now still like to hear from any other local businesses wishing to take part in the Community Toilet Scheme. For more information, please contact Stuart Brown, Mid Sussex District Council Outdoor Services Officer, on telephone number 01444 477305 or email Stuart.Brown@midsussex.gov.uk.

* The new public toilets in the King’s Street car park opposite the cinema in East Grinstead are expected to be opened by the end of May.  These will replace the toilet facilities in Cantelupe Road and the Norton Road car park, which will be closed once the new block is ready for use.
