Work starts soon to provide safe crossing points for pedestrians in a busy East Grinstead road.

The work aims to slow traffic in Imberhorne Lane and will comprise building two width-reduction islands between Bluebell Close and Heathcote Drive. One of the islands will help pedestrians cross the road more safely. Both of the islands will have a cycle ‘bypass’ to help cyclists pass through the islands in greater safety. There will also be signing and road markings to highlight the speed-reducing features.

Residents, the local county councillor and the town council had identified this area as needing improvement. Local consultation and formal advertisement has also been carried out.

The work is scheduled to start on 20 January and should take about four weeks, subject to factors such as severe weather. Temporary traffic lights will be in operation for the majority of the works.

A West Sussex Highways spokesperson said: “We are pleased to be responding to community concerns about vehicle speeds, with a scheme to improve safety, and we apologise for short-term disruption during the works. We will do all we can to try to limit this as much as possible by controlling the temporary traffic lights during peak periods.”

The project is being funded from developer contributions and will cost about £65,000.
