RUNNERS have been invited to take part in a unique three-part Marathon which will take place in Mid Sussex over the May Bank holiday weekend.

The Sussex Living Marathon Weekend, which has the backing of East Grinstead, Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath Town Councils, and the Mid Sussex District Council, will see the traditional Marathon distance divided amongst the three towns, over three days.

Hundreds of runners are expected to tackle the courses along routes which will be as far as possible traffic-free, using footpaths and trails around the towns.

The courses will be suitable for experienced runners, but it is hoped that by splitting the 26 miles over three days, more people will be encouraged to try running and to achieve their own personal milestones.

The first leg of the race will take place in East Grinstead on Saturday 5 May over a ten mile course, with a second ten miles at Haywards Heath on 6 May. The final leg will be at Burgess Hill to give a combined total of 26.2 miles – the classic Marathon distance.

Runners will be able to enter each race individually, but those completing all three legs will receive a special commemorative Sussex Living Marathon Weekend medal.

In addition to the main races, there will be sports taster events in East Grinstead. Children’s races will also be featured.

Runners and spectators will enjoy a range of attractions and activities at the three starting locations and it is hoped that the public will turn out in force to cheer the runners on.

The Sussex Living Marathon Weekend wants as many charities as possible to have the opportunity of raising funds via the event and local good causes are set to benefit as they recruit runners to raise funds on their behalf.

Any proceeds from the event will benefit local charities nominated by each of the three Town Councils.

Local businesses are also being encouraged to get involved either through entering teams, sponsoring and supporting the races, or offering discounts to runners taking part.

“We are very pleased indeed to welcome the Marathon to East Grinstead,” said Council Leader Norman Webster. “It will attract a great many visitors to the town for an event everyone can enjoy, and I hope as many people as possible will take up the challenge.”

Details of the East Grinstead route have to be finalized but it will be based around the East Grinstead Sports Club, and the local beneficiaries will be the EG Access Group and the EG Meridian Rotary.

Olympic gold medallist Richard Leman will start the race with members of the current GB Hockey team and paralympian Richard Schabel.

“We are delighted to be sponsoring this brilliant event in Mid Sussex,” said Tanis Banham, Director of Sussex Living. “As well as the healthy and fun side of the event, the Sussex Living Marathon will also attract lots of visitors to this beautiful part of the world, which I hope will be good for everyone’s business.”
