Stone Quarry Group are crowdfunding for a new café counter

There will be a short service in the High St from 10.30 in which a Deputy Lieutenant and Town Mayor amongst others will lay a wreath, a parade back to East Court which the public can fall in behind and then see exhibits including WW1 bi-plane & army encampment and farrier back at East Court. There will be music and speeches.

It is a family day out (ending at 3.30) children can enlist in the army and be drilled!

The Community Safety & Wellbeing Team (CSWB) is asking West Sussex Parents & Carers for their views & experiences in relation to keeping their children safe online.

We are looking to establish what parents & carers main concerns are when parenting in the digital age and what challenges they have faced. We want to understand how confident parents & carers are when dealing with these issues and if they know where to go for help, advice & support.

We want to know about the types of resources parents utilise, are aware of and have available to them, as well as the resources they really value in helping them to better support their young people.

The aim of the survey is to assist us in identifying if any further resources may need to be developed, or to raise awareness of existing resources and how we can better support parents and carers in this area.

We will be running the online survey to try and capture parents & carers views across the County and are encouraging as many people as possible to take part.

A choir from East Grinstead who sang at the daily Last Post ceremony in Ypres were praised for making it extra special for the hundreds of people gathered to remember the fallen from the First World War.

East Grinstead Choral Society members sang two specially selected songs while poppy wreaths were laid at the famous Menin Gate memorial in the Belgian town.

The Last Post, the traditional final salute to the fallen, is played by the buglers in honour of the memory of the 300,000 soldiers from the British and Commonwealth, who died in battles in the so-called Ypres Salient.

The service, which attracts hundreds of visitors, takes place every evening at 8pm at the Menin Gate, a memorial whose walls are inscribed with the names of almost 55,000 soldiers who have no known last resting place.

Chairman Richard Young said it was a very emotional experience for the choir.

“The response from the crowd afterwards was incredible, with people of different nationalities coming up to us to say how beautifully we sang and to thank us for making the occasion so special for them.”

As well as taking part in the Last Post Ceremony, the choir also sang at Mass at St Martin’s Cathedral and morning eucharist at St George’s, an Anglican church built in Ypres to serve both as permanent memorial to the dead and as a meeting place for the visiting relatives.

East Grinstead Choral Society’s next event is a Summer Soiree – an evening of popular choral classics and songs from West Side Story and Oliver!  – on Saturday 23 June at Imberhorne Lower School, Windmill Lane, East Grinstead. They will be joined by young voices from St Mary’s Primary School. Tickets, price £15, include a light supper and are available in advance only from choir members or by calling 01342 328774.

The choir will also be performing at East Court Live, the free party in the park on East Grinstead’s East Court terraces on Sunday 1 July.

The choir rehearses every Thursday evening during term time from 7.30pm to 9.45pm at the Jubilee Community Centre, East Grinstead, and new members would be made very welcome.

Healthwatch West Sussex are excited to announce the launch of our Community Fund for local community and voluntary groups with the aim to gather insight into people’s health
and social care experiences with a view to influencing future improvements.

We invite applications for awards of up to £500. Our aim is to keep the process simple and applying is easy so that we can make awards that make a difference to local people. All applications will be judged on their own merits and in relation to how they could contribute to improving people’s health and wellbeing experiences.

We would expect recipients to provide a simple report about their project/activity once completed to include: how many people were involved, how they raised awareness of Healthwatch West Sussex with their members and wider local community: so that we hear the ‘voices of your community health and care needs’. The report could possibly include photographs of the project, that we could use in our community work.

The projects do not have to be expensive or complicated, for example: enough to cover the cost of setting up an event within an existing group, or a new group so that people can meet to share their health and care experiences, or the cost of materials so that a group could produce artwork representing their experiences. No matter what your group is, if you are part of a community in West Sussex, we are keen to hear from you.

We will be reviewing applications every month and will reply as soon as we can.

We are advised by Mid Sussex District Council who are the landowners, that they have completed the required legal procedures and are now liaising with the Police regarding removal of the Travellers from their current location.

MSDC Officers are at the site again this morning to continue to monitor the situation and hope to resolve this situation as quickly as possible.
