Keep healthy and well throughout winter

Looking after our health and keeping well is even more important during the cold winter months. We also know that older residents can feel more socially isolated during winter and we are encouraging more people to join a group or club to build their social circle. You’ll find lots of information and contact details for organisations across West Sussex on our Age Well campaign pages.

Other ideas include ordering our Meals on Wheels service which delivers hot and nutritious food to vulnerable residents in their own homes 365 days a year. More than just a meal though, it provides the peace of mind that comes from regular safe and well checks by the dedicated team of delivery drivers who also offer a friendly face and regular company to their customers.

It’s also important to make sure you or your family have had the flu jab. It’s free for everyone who has a long-term condition, are over 65 or have young children.

Fire service launches Christmas drink and drug campaign

Firefighters in West Sussex are warning about the risks and consequences of drink and drug driving over the festive period.

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service has launched its ‘All I Want For Christmas’ campaign featuring children of emergency service employees encouraging drivers to think twice about the dangers of drink driving this Christmas.

In 2018, 28 people in West Sussex died or were left with serious, life changing injuries as a result of drink or drug driving.

For more information on the campaign and to watch the video visit our website.

Get ready to recycle

Over the winter months we recycle around 10,000 tonnes of paper and card, at our Household Waste Recycling Sites and via your home recycling collections.

Christmas and New Year are the busiest times of the year for recycling and staff at our Materials Recycling Facility. They will be working extra shifts to process your recyclable wrapping paper, cardboard boxes, and Christmas cards.

You can help us by making sure your recycling is clean, dry, and loose. Please don’t leave any recyclable materials outside of the bin as if it gets wet it won’t be able to get recycled. If you’re unsure whether you can recycle your wrapping paper do the scrunch test. If the paper stays scrunched then it’s okay to go in the recycling.

Don’t forget extra recycling that you can’t fit into your recycling bin can be taken to your Household Waste Recycling Site just be aware of our Christmas opening times. Remember to take some ID to prove you live in West Sussex.

A full A-Z of what can and can’t be recycled can be found on the West Sussex recycles website.

You can find your collection dates for over Christmas by following the link to your local district or borough’s website; Adur and WorthingArunChichesterCrawleyHorsham, or Mid Sussex.

River Mole at Charlwood and Hookwood

Flooding is expected – immediate action required

River levels are forecast to rise as a result of heavy rainfall. Consequently, flooding of property and roads and farmland is possible, beginning between 8 am and 10 am tomorrow, 20/12/2019. We believe there is a possibility of flooding for properties on and around Lee Street and Church Road, near the river. Further rainfall is forecast overnight into Friday. We expect river levels to remain high until Saturday afternoon 21/12/2019. We are closely monitoring the situation and our incident room is open. Our incident response staff are checking our defences and structures and liaising with emergency services and our partners. Please plan driving routes to avoid low lying roads near rivers which may be flooded, and avoid contact with flood water and remain safe in the area of concern.

VE Day Celebrations at East Court

May 2020 will mark the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, the unconditional surrender by Germany that brought a formal end to World War II in Europe. By the end of the conflict up to 80 million people had died.

The 75th anniversary will provide an opportunity to reflect on the enormous sacrifice, courage and determination of people who lived through this dark and terrifying period. It is likely to be the last at which those who actually served in the war will be present in any significant numbers.

Friday 8 May 2020 has been designated as a Bank Holiday, to give as many people as possible the opportunity to pay tribute to those who gave so much to ensure the freedoms we enjoy today, and to joyously celebrate, as people did in 1945, the arrival of peace in Europe.

Prime Minister Winston Churchill announced that the War in Europe was over at 3pm on 8 May 1945 and people are encouraged to take part in ‘The Nation’s Toast’ – an opportunity to raise a glass, wherever they are at 3pm on 8 May 2020, to the heroes of World War II.

To mark this landmark in the country’s history, the Town Council will be hosting a VE Day commemoration event at East Court on Friday 8 May, with a Mayoral Reception from 2.30pm to 4pm for East Grinstead residents who remember taking part in the VE Day celebrations of 1945. Guests will be invited to the Meridian Hall for refreshments and entertainment, where they will take part in The Nation’s Toast and share their reminiscences.

The day will have many elements, which are currently taking shape but will follow a national format. At 3pm a piper will play Battle’s O’er, a traditional air performed on the bagpipes at the end of a battle, followed by The Nation’s Toast.

From 4pm, entertainment will be provided in the Meridian Piazza and a pay bar will be available. Members of the public will be able to attend this free outdoor event.

At 6.55pm town criers around the world will take part in a special international Cry for Peace, and at 7pm East Grinstead church bells will be rung in celebration of peace and friendship.

Entertainment will continue throughout the evening, culminating in a firework display at 9pm.

Anyone with memories of VE Day 1945 who is willing to be recorded recounting their stories, is invited to apply for spaces at the Mayoral Reception by contacting the Mayor’s secretary mayorssecretary@eastgrinstead.gov.uk or 01342 335055

East Grinstead Christmas Family Festival

The Christmas Family Festival had fairground rides, charity and craft stalls and a French Market taking over the London Road. It was a very busy day and marks the last of the big town events for 2019.

Town Mayor Danny Favor arrived on the back of an open top car, to open the event with Father Christmas and the May Princess.

Kids Travel Free at weekends until the end of December

Whether you are on your way to visit Santa’s grotto, shopping in County Mall or going for a winter walk in Tilgate Park, children travel free on the bus every weekend in December, starting this Saturday (30 November).

The Kids Travel Free deal is for up to three children under 16 who are accompanied by an adult, including adults with concession passes, and it’s valid across the bus company’s entire Metrobus and Brighton & Hove network.

Brighton & Hove and Metrobus’ Managing Director Martin Harris said: “Kids Travel Free is a great incentive to go out and have fun and to leave the car at home. The lead up to Christmas is probably the busiest time of the year, so using public transport means less congested city centres and takes away the stress of finding a parking spot. Not only that, it’s better for the environment too.”

An extra weekend has been added this year so people can go to the Boxing Day Sales and new cinema releases.

The dates of Kids Travel Free are: 30 November & 1 December; 7 & 8 December; 14 & 15 December; 21 & 22 December and 28 & 29 December. The offer is not valid on night buses and children must be accompanied by an adult.
