IN a regular feature on the Town Council website, we will be remembering, on the anniversary of their deaths, the East Grinstead soldiers who died during WWI, and who are named on the High Street War Memorial.

Died of wounds 11. 8.16. Son of Mr. Cooper and Mrs. M.A.Cooper of 4, Council Cottages East Grinstead.
Born and enlisted in East Grinstead
Buried Bouzincourt Communal Cemetery Extension F.296.
William Jesse. RUSSELL
Private .24126 1st Garrison Battalion, . The Bedfordshire Regiment.
Died of disease in India 18. 8.16. Born and enlisted in East Grinstead. Next of kin East Grinstead.
Formerly with the Royal Sussex Regiment.
Buried Delhi War Cemetery, India.
Arthur James WHITE
Lance Corporal G/7319 9th Battalion, The Royal Sussex Regiment. 24th Division.
Killed in action on the Somme at Guillemont 18. 8.16.
Born in Lingfield, Surrey and enlisted in East Grinstead
Buried Serre Road Cemetery Number 2. F. 1890
Laurence H. WILLSON
Lance Corporal G.3683 9th Battalion, The Royal Sussex Regiment. 24th Division.
Died of wounds 25. 8.16. age 20. Son of William and Anne Amelia Willson of “Oaklands”, Baldwins Hill, East Grinstead.
Born in Dalson, East London and enlisted in Brighton
Buried La Neuville British Cemetery, Corbie F. 66.
Herbert Lancelot WOODLAND
Second Lieutenant 1/10th Battalion, The Kings Liverpool Regiment. 3rd Division.
Killed in action on the Somme 9. 8.16.age 32. Son of The Rev Clement Colby Woodland and Mrs. Frances Woodland of Hammerwood, East Grinstead.
Served in the South African War.
