January                          No meeting

Friday 21 February      JUMPING THE POND by Tony Turner. The first 50 years of Transatlantic Aviation.

Friday 20th March       OPEN FORUM Discussion on Planning, Development and Heritage issues, followed by a short talk given by the Warden of Sackville College.

Friday 17th April         EAST GRINSTEAD AS SEEN IN MANORIAL RECORDS by Jeremy Clarke. These valuable sources help us to understand more about the history, geography and people of East Grinstead Parish from the 12th to the 19th century.

Sunday 3rd May       MAY FAIR Society Stall in the High Street. 10am – 4pm. An opportunity to find out who we are and what we do, plus a tombola with fantastic prizes!

Friday 15th May           WAKEHURST, KEW AND THE NATIONAL TRUST by Paul Reader. This talk covers why Kew came to Wakehurst, its association with the National Trust and the impact of the 1987 storm.

Friday 19th June           ART DECO by Ian Gledhill. The style that defined the Jazz Age. We had several Art Deco buildings in East Grinstead including the Cinema and Caffyns, sadly now demolished. However, the exterior of the newly situated Martell’s shop still retains its Art Deco frontage formerly known as the Whitehall.

Friday 17th July            SCANDAL, SALVATION AND SUFFRAGE by Ros Black.

Ros also includes the growth of the women’s temperance movement in her talk.

August                         No meeting.

Friday 18th September  THE SISTERS OF ST MARGARET: PART 2 the Convent on Moat Road.  Kathryn Ferry continues the story of East Grinstead’s Anglican sisterhood and describes how their Grade 1 listed Convent was built and used.

Friday 16th October      53rd ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING. Assessment of the Society in 2020 and election of a new Committee. Followed by a short talk given by Lester Porter; Chairman of the East Grinstead Museum Trustees.

Friday 20th November  A SUSSEX FARM IN THE 1950’S by Ian Everest. This talk shows just how tough life was on a South Downs farm during the 1950’s and includes original cine film.

Friday 11th December  Cllr REX WHITTAKER will talk about the ‘ups and downs’ of being a local representative.

Friday meetings start at 7.30pm in the Main Hall, East Court Mansion, College Lane, RH19 3LT, with a charge of £1.00/member and £3/non-member.

Annual adult subscription of £10 includes a Newsletter.

The East Grinstead Society is an independent association which exists to maintain and enhance the town’s distinctive character by monitoring planning applications and the amenities in the town and its surroundings.  Evening meetings are held during the year, with guided walks, on request, reflecting the town’s heritage, participation in cultural events and recognition of notable members and residents.
