Guardsman William Buckland and Guardsman William Deacon were reservists called up to serve with the British Expeditionary Force in 1914. Both were killed at the Battle of Aisne in September of that year. Private Buckland and Private Deacon came from East Grinstead and were the first soldiers from the town to be killed in the First World War. This talk woll look at their lives before the war as well as the actions that led to their deaths during the first major battle involving trench warfare on the Western Front.
